Our History
In the mid 1970's, Hilger Hertel, a well-known and respected insurance professional, the "Dean" of marine insurance in the Eastern Caribbean, opened an insurance agency in downtown Christiansted, St. Croix and started producing insurance for, among others, The Commonwealth Insurance Company of Puerto Rico. When the Commonwealth ceased writing, the agency became Inter-Ocean Insurance Agency, and represented the Netherlands Insurance Company as an agent while brokering to American International Underwriters and Talbot Bird of New York and other insurance entities. In 1981 Aston Wayne Harty, then operating A. Wayne Harty Insurance Services, purchased Inter-Ocean Insurance Agency and incorporated it in 1987. During this period Inter-Ocean secured an agency contract with Sun Alliance of Puerto Rico and became tribunalized at Lloyd's in 1984. With purposeful and directed growth, Inter-Ocean steadily increased in size and, after opening its St. Thomas branch in 1991, became a leader and household name in the insurance industry. On July 1, 2024, Inter-Ocean was acquired by Marshall+Sterling, granting more services and market access to Inter-Ocean’s clientele.​
